ABOUT HAPPY VALLEY
For nearly 10 years, I’ve been returning home to Utah to photograph my family in Happy Valley. Happy Valley, also known as Utah Valley, is located in the Wasatch Mountains about fifty miles south of Salt Lake City. it’s the suburban homeland of the Mormons and LDS (Latter-Day Saint) Church.
Happy Valley offers a rare and intimate glimpse into Mormon culture, which is often misunderstood and shrouded in mystery, by looking at just one family, my own. It began in response to my struggles with Mormonism and life in Utah as a teenager. In college, I found photography and began to reconnect with my family by documenting them. The camera linked my past with their present and was a way to understand both. Over time Happy Valley developed into a compelling and personal history that explores the meaning of family, relationships, childhood, religion, identity and finding one’s place in the world. These universal issues profoundly affect all of us and bind us together. Whether you’re Mormon, religious, agnostic, or impartial, I want Happy Valley to speak to everyone about fundamental aspects of our shared human experience in a very personal way.
